Dom Robert Museum

Abbaye école
Sorèze

Details of the activity

Developing over 1500m², this new museum, integrated into a renovated wing of the buildings, was designed by the Italian architectural firm n'studio, in a spirit that is both contemporary and respectful of heritage. The museography allows you to understand the process of creating a tapestry - from the preparatory drawing to the finished work - and to pay tribute to the know-how of the Aubusson weavers, classified by Unesco as an intangible cultural heritage of Humanity since 2009. ART The work of Dom Robert was a source of inspiration for the design of the Museum. A resonance between the work of art and architecture was revealed in a thought expressed by Dom Robert about truancy: "In a tapestry, we walk... A walk without a precise goal, we like to stroll . One detail leads you to another. In short, tapestry is more of an art of time. Art of time by its craftsmanship too, art of long patience…”. Dom Robert (1907-1997), a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of En Calcat, located in Dourgne in the Tarn, is one of the masters of 20th century tapestry. His abundant, very colorful work is inspired by nature and exalts the fauna and flora of the Montagne Noire, the last buttress of the Massif Central. NATURE It is in this natural environment, integrated into the Regional Natural Park of Haut Languedoc, that the museum dedicated to him opened in April 2015 within the Abbey-school of Sorèze, located a few kilometers from Dourgne . This museum showcases the original work of Dom Robert, confronted with other works by artists who also participated in the revival of Aubusson tapestry, including Lurçat, Prassinos and Tourlière.
