The tradition of fairs and markets in Albi is very old. In the Middle Ages, the surroundings of the Sainte-Cécile cathedral and the Saint-Salvi collegiate church were already popular for trading. From 1860, Albi decided to build a covered food market following the example of Les Halles de Paris. The covered market hall is the soul of the Saint-Julien district. A TRIANGULAR HALL DESIGNED BY ANDRE MICHELIN The plan adopted is a triangular hall of the "Baltard pavilion" type associating the metal uprights with brick walls and shutters intended to be assembled like a gigantic construction game. A place of exchanges and activities par excellence, the covered market offers a rare harmony of forms perfectly suited to its function. a little history: In 1901, the municipal council of Albi approved the launch of a competition for the construction of a covered market. In 1902, the agreement is given to the project of Thierry Bourdois, architect in Poissy, assisted by a designer of metal frames who will become world famous: André Michelin. THE COVERED MARKET, MEMORY OF ALBIGEAN TRADE Gastronomy and local products are part of the Albigensian art of living. Greengrocers, canneries, cheese makers, bakers, delicatessen, roasters, caterers ... welcome you every day from Tuesday to Sunday from 7 am to 2 pm An underground car park (paying) is set up under the market.
