Village of Bruniquel

Maire
Bruniquel

Details of the activity

At the limit of Quercy and Rouergue, at the end of the Gorges de l'Aveyron, Bruniquel watches from the top of its castles, the valleys of Aveyron and Vère. One of our pride, the village is classified among the most beautiful villages in France. Prehistoric origins The Bruniquel site has been occupied since the Lower and Middle Paleolithic (-350000 to -35000). Remains have recently been discovered in the Pouxets cave, where men are said to have set up an underground bivouac. For reasons of protection, this cavity is not open to the public but a special file has been developed by the Société Spéléo-Archéologique de Caussade (SSAC). A photo exhibition in the old castle will give you an idea of the importance of this discovery. In the Middle Magdalenian (about -15000), the shelters near the river, under the cliff of the castle, regularly served as habitat for the first human groups established in the valley. Absolute masterpieces such as the "jumping horse", the "reindeer following each other", the "sculpted mammoth", as well as a female human skeleton "the lady of Bruniquel" have been discovered there. (The casts of these objects are now presented to the public in a castle room). Many traces of human presence can be read in the landscape: many caves, that of Marnières is decorated with two bison, the necropolises on the Pech can be guessed under the tumuli. The legend… A scribe from Moissac made mention of the village for the first time in the eleventh century under the name of Brunichildum, a legend attributes the founding of the city to Queen Brunehaut, who was indeed a great builder. Its legend and its tragic end haunts even the name of the place, the “red coast” owes its name to it, but it is undoubtedly a poet's initiative, many of them stayed in Bruniquel.
